Comparison Between Talalay and Dunlop Mattresses

To better understand the differences between Talalay latex mattresses and Dunlop latex mattresses we first need to point out an interesting fact about them: that both the Talalay and Dunlop names are used to differentiate not the mattresses where these types of latex are used, but the processes through which each of them are produced.

Manufacturing Processes

In case of the so-called Dunlop latex, the manufacturing process of this latex is the oldest one, and we can trace its origins all the way back to the beginning of the century. Its process is more simple and “organic” since no additional elements are added to it.

In order to produce latex through the Dunlop manufacturing method, first the rubber has to be manually extracted from rubber trees and then carried to the factories where it will be further processed. Once at the factories, the rubber is frothed and sanitized at very high temperatures to be then poured into big molds where the now latex will cool down and take its shape.
v At this stage of the process the residues of the latex find their way to the bottom of the mix, creating that characteristic trait of “Dunlop latex”, which is its high density and that solid bottom that will later become part of a Dunlop latex mattress.

On the other side, we have the Talalay process, which is a more modern latex manufacturing procedure and as such, it is far more technical and complicated than the Dunlop process. In order to obtain latex by employing this manufacturing method, the steps to follow are identical to the ones of the Dunlop process until the moment the liquid latex is poured into the mold to cool down. In the Talalay process, once the latex is in the mold, the mold is sealed and all the air in it is extracted from it using a vacuum. After that, the whole Talalay process comes to an end with the latex being stabilized by a process called flash freezing.

As a result of this complex process, “Talalay latex” features somewhat more consistency but at the same time becomes also more expensive due to the added steps to its manufacturing process.

Comparing Dunlop vs Talalay Mattresses

Now, when it comes to choosing one or the other, there is no clear winner among mattresses that use latex manufactured by either process. In the end it all comes down to the taste and preference of the final consumers and to how much information they have about the companies that manufacture mattresses and about any additional elements they might use to produce them.

For example, we have many companies out there that are known for adding clay to the latex mix they use in their mattresses, thus substantially diminishing their quality in the sake of more accessible prices.

In any case, regardless of what manufacturing method is employed for the latex that will be part of any given mattress, it is always worth considering that any mattress that is professionally manufactured by a top company in the industry, like Select Foam for example, will always be of far better quality than any conventional type of mattress.
