Magnetic vs Memory Foam Mattresses

How does the memory foam bed stack up against the magnetic mattress? The memory foam bed is made from visco elastic memory foam and is constructed usually from a number of layers of support, foundation, orthopaedic, comfort and plushness. The construction process allows for an airflow layer that will move the body temperature heat away from the sleeper, creating a cool and comfortable sleep surface.

Since the 1990s the memory foam mattress has been a popular choice for the sleeper moving away from old fashioned spring or coil designed mattresses. The pain caused when skin, joint and bones are constantly against the hard metal coils and springs can cause irritation. Over time for the sleeper unable to move freely in the night, the pressure from springs will create a bed sore or will cause the sleeper more discomfort if they can’t move away from the spring or coil. Memory foam is free from allergens and dust mites. The memory foam makes for a restful nights sleep especially for those with fibromyalgia, arthritis and other chronic pain conditions. It is a logical solution for long term care patients, especially where there are mobility issues. The spinal alignment created by the orthopaedic and support layers and the contour ability of the memory foam mattress can reduce problems for the sleep apnea or snoring sufferer.

The memory foam market is an established part of the non-spring mattress industry; it represents more than 2% of the market share of the alternative mattress industry. For twenty years, the memory foam market has been a registered, well documented alternative for the sleeper looking to benefit from a wide range of health benefits offered by the memory foam mattress.

Magnetic beds have gained popularity as a way to send electro-magnetic energy into the sleeper. The bed has magnets built into the mattress. The magnetic bed is often sold as part of magnetic therapy which claims to relieve pain and eliminate a wide range of medical conditions. Magnetic therapy claims that the patient needs additional electro magnetic energy to balance the body’s natural magnetic energy. The practice of working with magnets for health has been around for centuries but the magnetic mattress as a consumer good is relatively new to the American consumer. The World Health Organization has ruled that the magnets used pose no health risk in general to the sleeper, however patients with pacemakers, insulin delivery systems and other medical devices are warned not to use magnetic mattresses as they will interfere with the functioning of the medical devices and may complicate medical conditions if the medical devices fail.

The magnet bed is often constructed to also look like a traditional mattress and the magnetic layer is surrounded by comfort and support layers. The mattress should fit into most traditional bed furniture. The proponents of the magnet mattress believe that it will support health, increase overall wellness and will improve the deeper levels of sleep. The opponents of magnetic therapy believe that is not only ineffective but in the case of sleepers with pacemakers it can be dangerous.

The biggest difference in the magnetic mattress and the memory foam mattress seem to be in the credibility and controversy surrounding them. The memory foam mattress evolved from the science and technology of the space program. It has been part of the culture for decades. The health benefits of memory foam are well established as the original use for memory foam was a medical application. The consumer can check clearly with medical professionals the benefits of contoured sleep, high density, open cell foam for support and comfort.
